Capability Focus Areas

The Hub is tasked with simplifying business and directing international investment and job growth across the State by building capability, through a collaborative approach between the public and private sector.

Our capability focus areas are:
  • Critical infrastructure
  • Cyber Crime
  • Big data

Critical Infrastructure

Critical infrastructure exists in both physical and cyber systems across Australia. This infrastructure is vital for both the physical and economic security of our country, as well as our public health and safety.

Repeated and continued cyber attacks demonstrate that there is an ongoing threat to Australia's critical infrastructure and essential services - and therefore a need for the work undertaken by the Hub to bolster and strengthen WA’s cyber security capacity and competence.

The Hub is focused on building the security and resilience of WA’s critical infrastructure through collaborative partnership between governments, industry and non-government partners.
In line with recent changes to critical infrastructure laws, the 11 critical infrastructure sectors that the Hub focuses on are:
  • communications
  • financial services and markets
  • data storage and processing
  • defence industry
  • higher education and research
  • energy
  • food and grocery
  • health care and medical
  • space technology
  • transport
  • water and sewerage

Big Data

Big data is most simply described as extremely large amounts of structured and unstructured data that requires powerful computational analysis techniques to reveal patterns, trends, and associations from datasets that are diverse, complex, and of a massive scale.

Of course with big data comes bigger risk...

Big Data has opened up myriad new opportunities and possibilities to protect and prevent against cyber attacks.

But it has also given cyber criminals previously unprecedented access to mass quantities of sensitive and personal data - along with the advanced technologies capable of wielding it.

Organisations must tackle three key challenges in this area to be poised to adequately handle data at scale:
  • Systems and processes to protect sensitive and personal information
  • Understand and comply with data rights and ownership
  • Having access to the right resources (i.e. data scientists)

In line with the Hub’s key priorities, of partner, build, commercialise, our remit is to facilitate connections, build capability and help direct investment into big data startups, with the view to reducing the risks and increasing the capabilities of our state in this key growth area.

Cyber Crime

Cyber crime is now a sophisticated transnational threat that impacts government, organisations and individuals alike.

In Australia, cyber crime can be both:
  • crimes directed at computers or other information communications technologies (ICTs) (such as computer intrusions and denial of service attacks), and
  • crimes where computers or ICTs are an integral part of an offence (such as online fraud, money laundering and identity theft).

New technologies are opening up many new possibilities for conducting business and improving our lives.

But they are also creating new avenues for criminals to commit new crimes, along with old crimes in new ways.

The reality of this is that individuals, businesses and governments must be more prepared than ever to deal with the sophistication and impact of cybercrimes.

The Hub’s key activities in this area are to:
  • raise awareness of cyber crime within the business and broader community
  • educate those businesses and communities on how to reduce their cyber risk
  • support and complement the efforts of The Western Australian Police Force, Australian Federal Police and the Australian Cyber Security Centre in tackling cyber security issues
